Brief Excerpt from NO ONE KNOWS--Jim Gleeson's Second "Novel About the Truth"

From No One Knows, The Square Root of Love--Matt Lacker #1 page 149--

The mysterious young man begins explaining the world to two renowned scientists:

Anya kept her gaze on Personne like she still wanted an answer.

Personne complied. “Are you familiar with the ‘fallacy of the constants?’” Anya and Hill moved their heads from side to side somewhat tentatively. “The Earth is a living, breathing consciousness. There is an ebb and flow to the forces of gravity and magnetism. While it is true that all of the attributes of our environment are such that, if any one of them were only slightly off we would disappear, but that doesn’t mean they are each independently constant. They are, however, in constant, perfect harmony in relation to each other. Science has become or perhaps always has been a religion based on faith in a fixed order of acceptable belief. There is an inertia of prior beliefs, and our failure to recognize that truth is not entirely accidental. Today we humans are better story-tellers than scientists. We see the universe through the filter of tales we are told in childhood and our education systems reward those who can best repeat them. Dissent is discouraged so that many of the brightest intellects become bored and drop out. The history of science is sanitized by both habit and agenda to ignore the great controversies of the past, which were generally either ‘won’ by a vote --instead of reasoned debate-- or purposely forgotten, like the fallacy of the constants…or the origin of life. Today science moves forward by flow report not experimentation, and investigative journalism is, of course, against the rules. It is often said, ‘extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.’ In actuality, en-trenched paradigms resist extraordinary disproof.”

This was all very difficult for both Anya and Hill to swallow. But they were mentally so curious and enthralled by their new acquaintance that they couldn’t consider stopping the boulder careening down on them about to push them into the abyss—not the unknown—but a known fate that would become unavoidable. If they had been hearing these things from a well known physicist presenting the studied work of his reputable team, that would be different. But this was a thirty-year-old wearing a hoody...
